The Victorian Blue Light Youth Camp is located in Maldon 136km northwest of Melbourne. From other major centres we are just 12 minutes from Castlemaine and 25 minutes from Bendigo. The property is set within 200 metres to the centre of the Maldon township. It was built in 1987 as a unique accommodation provider, being designed to replicate the style of the original Derby Hill Gold Mine, located at the site. In 1990 the property was acquired from the Victorian Government by Blue Light Victoria and developed as a school camp.
Since this time the camp has run school camps which specialise in bicycle safety among many other activities synonymous with the local area. More recently we have introduced programs targeting young people who have been identified as being at risk of becoming a victim or perpetrator of crime. Blue Light Victoria traditionally has close links with Victoria Police and it is a fantastic opportunity to provide a fun and relaxed environment to build positive relationships between young people and police.
In relation to this event the camp is a not-for-profit and all monies raised from the event will go into improving facilities and what we offer students, at-risk youth and community groups.
The Camp Manager Craig Green is your Race Director. Craig is experienced in both competing and hosting running events and was Race Director for the inaugural O’Keefe (Marathon) Challenge in 2016 and also in 2017. He is the former General Manager of Athletics Bendigo and the organiser of numerous cross country events. He has a passion in developing courses that will not only challenge participants but also highlight the natural beauty and environment that the event is held within. Maldon and Mt Tarrengower provide that in an abundance.
Our other event staff and volunteers have a great understanding of Mt Tarrengower which is used regularly for hiking by schools, youth and other community groups.
We welcome you to the inaugural event in 2019. For 2020 it is likely to also offer an ultra-marathon that will not only take in Maldon and Mt Tarrengower, but also the trails around the Castlemaine Rail Trail and Muckleford as well the Nuggetty Ranges and the Rock of Ages.
